49ers star linebacker Dre Greenlaw has had a costly start to the season.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero broke news on Saturday that Greenlaw has been fined $12,537 for unnecessary roughness against Falcons star wide receiver Drake London.

Greenlaw tried to punch the ball out of London’s hands during the 49ers’ 29-20 loss to the Falcons last Sunday.

Greenlaw’s punch missed its target, as he connected with London’s helmet instead.

No penalty was called on Greenlaw during the play, but video replays of the incident showed why Greenlaw ultimately got in trouble.

London left the game to be evaluated for a concussion after the punch but was ultimately cleared and able to return.

There is no reason to believe there was any malice behind Greenlaw’s punch, as it just didn’t connect where it was meant to.

Greenlaw was fined $11,941 by the NFL for taunting the Broncos’ bench (specifically his former head coach, Sean Payton) earlier in the season.

The star linebacker will surely hope to stop giving the league reasons to fine him once San Francisco returns from its bye week.
