Dolores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers union to improve working conditions in the nation's fruit and vegetable fields and coined the phrase "Sí, se puede!" that became a widespread rallying cry, has died. She was 96.

Huerta's family said she died Wednesday at home.

"We know that many of you around the world share in our mourning, and we will be following up on plans to recognize and celebrate her incredible life and legacy," they said in a statement shared by her foundation.

Huerta kept a busy schedule well into her 90s, marching in protests and speaking across the country about race, poverty, LGBTQ+ and women's rights on behalf of her Bakersfield, California-based foundation.
