Rebecca Gayheart was concerned about her estranged husband Eric Dane’s headaches ahead of his ALS diagnosis.
The actress told Drew Barrymore on “Personal Spaces” Wednesday that this symptom was the first she noticed.
“He never once had a headache for all the years we were married or dated,” the former model, 55, explained, noting that he started “complaining about” some “a few months” before his hand weakness.
“I was like, ‘Eric, you never get headaches. You’ve never taken an Advil. What are you talking about a headache? You don’t have a headache,'” she recalled.
At the time, Dane simply thought he had “slept on [his] neck funny.”
Gayheart noted, “That continued. That was apart of it. So there were definitely signs, but nothing was so major that you would really stop and pay attention to it.”

Dane was diagnosed with ALS in 2024, and he lost his battle to the disease in February.
The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum wrote in his posthumous memoir, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” that his first symptom was struggling to use chopsticks while enjoing a sushi dinner.
“Suddenly I can’t work the chopsticks with my right hand,” he remembered in the book, out Tuesday. “My hand tingles, and then my fingers feel numb.”
The actor initially believed he was “texting too much.”
However, three weeks later, Dane’s weakness became “worse” until he couldn’t “grip the chopsticks at all.”
The “Euphoria” alum subsequently spent months being “shuttled from doctor to doctor and under[going] a battery of tests,” he told readers.
He received a misdiagnosis of multifocal motor neuropathy, “a rare autoimmune disorder causing extreme muscle weakness” with “90 percent effective” treatment.
Dane’s medical team got “scared” when he did not respond to the treatment.
Nine months later — after a lumbar puncture, spinal fluid extraction and brain scans — he received his diagnosis.
The late “Last Ship” star went public with the news in April 2025, the same month he and Gayheart filed to dismiss their divorce.
Gayheart explained Tuesday that while they were not together romantically, they did keep their family “intact” for daughters Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14.
