Loew's Theatre
There’s something newish coming to New Jersey.
On Monday, Nov. 9, the historic Loew’s Jersey Theatre — aka one of the five historic 1929 movie palace “Wonder Theatres” — is re-opening in Jersey City’s Journal Square.
This re-entrance into the Garden State comes after more than 40 years of limited use and a thorough $130 million restoration to preserve the venue’s historic architecture, shimmering chandeliers, gold leaf and custom-built “Wonder Morton” pipe organ.
Once open, the classically-designed theatre will host household name bands, singers and comedians. At the time of publication, they’ve booked 16 huge shows.
Just a few of the most notable include:
Trey Anastasio Band
Friday, Nov. 13
7:30 p.m.
The War On Drugs
Saturday, Nov. 14
8 p.m.
Jodeci
Wednesday, Nov. 18
8 p.m.
Chelsea Handler
Saturday, Dec. 12
7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Jimmy O. Yang
Saturday, Feb. 27, 2027
8 p.m.
Other huge artists set to headline at Loew’s in the near future include Derek Hough, Ice Nine Kills, Chris Tomlin, Jeff Dunham and Gary Owen among others.
Once Loew’s gets into the swing of things, the 2,600-to-4,000-seat multipurpose venue will host approximately 150 events annually.
The space, which was built by architect George Rapp in a gilded Baroque-Rococo style, was one of five Wonder Theatres “constructed between 1929-30 across the tri-state area, along with the Loew’s Paradise in the Bronx, the Loew’s Kings in Brooklyn, the Loew’s Valencia in Queens, and the Loew’s 175th Street, now known as the United Palace Theatre,” 6sqft noted.
Mayor James Solomon called the venue “a symbol of Jersey City’s past and future” before adding “for decades, Journal Square has been the heart of our city, home to working families, immigrants, and dreamers, and this restoration is a testament to their resilience and to the neighborhood they never gave up on.”
Should you attend a show, we recommend visiting nearby upscale restaurants Jane Doe, Kaaram and BRBQ as well to complement your evening.

What does the inside of the Loew’s Theatre look like?
An ornate relic of the early 20th century.
Grand yet intimate, exquisitely designed with painstaking attention to detail, the Loew’s Theatre is as much of an attraction as the headliners taking center stage. Expect to hear people throw the word “opulent” around.
