A recall of Pistachio Nut Butter due to possible contamination with Salmonella has been issued the highest risk warning by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Botticelli Foods LLC issued a voluntary recall of 16,200 jars of the product on August 3 after Walmart was informed that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services had tested three jars at a store and identified the presence of Salmonella.

The affected product has an expiration date of January 28, 2027, along with the UPC code 194346207961, and lot number LB028ACP04.

The FDA issued a Class 1 classification for the recall on August 26. A Class I warning—one of three—represents "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," according to the FDA.

Salmonella bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis in infected individuals. Symptoms typically develop 12 to 72 hours after infection, and usually last between four and seven days.

Typical symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. People experiencing more severe infections may also suffer high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, rashes and blood in their urine.

The recalled nut butter was distributed to Walmart stores across 19 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

As of August 3, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the product.

The recall remains ongoing, and consumers are being advised not to consume the product and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
