The former school security guard who sued Shilo Sanders for nearly $12 million collapsed Thursday in court in Denver during the bankruptcy trial and landed in the hospital, according to USA Today.
John Darjean, who is owed $11.89 million from the son of NFL Hall of Famer and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, reportedly testified for more than two hours and then collapsed in pain.
An ambulance transported the 50-year-old Darjean to a hospital and he was discharged later in the day, per USA Today.
Thursday marked the fourth day of bankruptcy trial stemming from Sanders allegedly assaulting Darjean at a Texas high school on Sept. 17, 2015.
Darjean alleged Deion had asked him to confiscate his son’s phone, only for then-15-year-old Shilo to assault him when he attempted to do so.
He claimed he “sustained severe and permanent injuries including a broken neck, damage to his cervical spine, permanent neurological injuries and irreversible incontinence,” according to Westword.com.
Darjean sued Sanders in 2016 and six years later the case went to trial, with the court ruling in the former’s favor with an $11.89 million verdict.
Shilo reportedly did not appear for the trail.
“The Court finds that Shilo Sanders’ actions were the proximate cause of John Darjean’s injuries/damages,”a Dallas County judge ruled, per USA Today. “The Court further finds that Shio (sic) Sanders actions were a substantial factor in bringing about the physical and mental injuries sustained by John Darjean, without which such injuries and damages would not have occurred.”
One year later, he filed for bankruptcy in hope escaping the debt owed to the former Yankee prospect whom the Bronx Bombers selected in the sixth round of the 1997 MLB Draft.
Darjean’s camp is arguing that this debt stems from “willful and malicious injury,” per USA Today, which would prevent the amount owed from being discharged.
Shilo testified Tuesday claiming that Darjean instead “attacked and assaulted” him and caused him to “black out,” according to USA Today.
“I literally have proof of both of his hands tearing my skin off,” Sanders said, per the outlet.
Thursday’s proceedings featured one witness appearing to contradict Shilo’s version of events, along with police and medial reports being exhibited, per USA Today.
While Deion had been subpoenaed to appear Friday during the trial, the judge reportedly released him from his duties Thursday.
Deion later led Colorado to a thrilling 14-13 road win over Georgia Tech on Thursday after blocking a last-second field goal attempt.
